Grocery Veteran John Lucot Joins Mercatus as Senior Strategic Advisor to the Executive Team

Former president and COO of Giant Eagle will help accelerate Mercatus’ market growth and drive additional value for grocery retailers

TORONTO – May 12, 2021- Mercatus, a leading provider in grocery eCommerce solutions, today announced that John Lucot has joined the company as senior strategic advisor to the executive team. In this new role at Mercatus, Lucot will support retailer engagement initiatives, providing his deep grocery and industry knowledge to ensure the success of the Mercatus client community and further advancement of Mercatus’ cloud offerings.

An industry veteran, Lucot spent 42 years at Giant Eagle, one of the nation’s largest food retailers and distributors, where he served as president and COO before his 2016 retirement. Lucot also served as a member of Topco Holdings Board of Directors and was named Chairman of the Board in 2016. A longtime member of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) Board of Directors, Lucot continues to serve on various industry and charitable boards.

In the last 12 months, consumers have shifted dramatically to using online channels to do their grocery shopping. This pattern shows no sign of slowing down based on research sponsored by Mercatus and conducted by Brick Meets Click. The U.S. online grocery market finished March 2021 with $9.3 billion in sales. This represents a 43% jump in sales, versus a year ago when sales were $6.5 billion, with curbside pickup attracting the largest share of monthly shoppers at 53%.

U.S. Online Grocery Sales Grow to $8.6 Billion in August 2021

The U.S. online grocery market generated $8.6 billion in sales during August, a gain of 4.7% versus a year ago, as ship-to-home sales dropped nearly 22% to $2 billion and the combined delivery/pickup segment grew over 16% to $6.6 billion, according to the Brick Meets Click/Mercatus Grocery Shopping Survey fielded August 29-30, 2021.

Total U.S. Online Grocery Sales for June 2021 Down 23% Versus Year Ago

The U.S. online grocery market generated $6.8 billion in sales during June, down 23% versus a year ago and 3% lower versus May, as ship-to-home sales totaled $1.5 billion and pickup/delivery reached $5.3 billion, according to the Brick Meets Click/Mercatus Grocery Shopping Survey fielded June 27-28, 2021.


Total U.S. Online Grocery Sales for May 2021 Down 16% Versus Year Ago

The 16% drop in sales in May 2021 was driven by declines in several key performance indicators including monthly active users, order frequency, and average order value. Despite these reductions, total online sales in May remained 3.5 times higher than pre-COVID levels (2.0 billion in total sales for Aug. 2019 per prior Brick Meets Click research).
